Transfer tape, also known as application tape or “pre-mask”, is a staple of digital graphics. It's purpose is to assist in the application of vinyl graphics to various substrates. After the decal has been cut and weeded, the transfer tape is then laid down over the cut and weeded letters and smoothed down with a squeegee. Once you have joined the weeded vinyl graphics, the vinyl release liner, and the transfer tape, it is ready to be placed and installed.
After adjusting to position, the release liner is then pealed away leaving only the transfer tape and weeded vinyl graphic which are then carefully applied to the substrate and smoothed out with a squeegee. Since the adhesion on the transfer tape is much less than the adhesive on the vinyl graphics, it can be carefully peeled away from the substrate, leaving only the higher adhesive intended graphics adhered to the substrate. Although some vinyl graphics can be transferred by hand, in the majority of cases transfer tape and a squeegee are a must-have.
